Throw it away? No such thing....

Choose a type of waste that has to be separated from “regular” garbage, either to be recycled, or disposed of in a special way due to its hazardous nature. Research the process of managing that waste from what products it is found in to how it completes its “life” cycle. If it can not be recycled or disposed of locally, what are some of the risks of sending it to the landfill? Be thorough and DO NOT PLAGARIZE!!!

  3. Only about five percent of a foam package (ie. Styrofoam) is polystyrene. The rest is air. There are benefits from Styrofoam including insulating quality that helps keep food warm. Polystyrene (Styrofoam) is made from petroleum, And in its production process, a carcinogenic chemical known as benzene is used. Due to the presence of benzene in Styrofoam, it is inevitable that food in direct contact with the Styrofoam food packaging would be affected. Styrofoam is hardly biodegradable, When ingested by animals, it often blocks their digestive tracts, causes starvation, and ultimately death. The process of recycling Styrofoam involves feeding the collected EPS foam through conveyor belts into a shredding machine. When it comes to recycling Styrofoam on a large scale, there are also some difficulties. Given the light weight of Styrofoam, the cost of transporting Styrofoam to a recycling plant makes it often cost prohibitive to send Styrofoam for recycling. Instead of having to recycle Styrofoam, one of the best ways to deal with Styrofoam is not to use it at all! This reduce approach is in accordance with the 3R (i.e. Reduce Reuse Recycle) principle of waste management

  6. Life cycle of a glass bottle: Glass is made of silica sand, sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, and other minerals. After tumbling, the glass mixture is poured into a furnace and heated. A forehearth removes the glass from the furncace, then enters a forming machine. After molding, the glass cools. After bottles are shipped, they are sold in stores and restaurants. Glass is 100% recyclable, meaning that the entire bottle can be reused. When glass is recycled, it is first picked up and shipped to recycling centers. Then, the glass is cleaned and sorted. The recycling center then goes through the process of forming bottles after breaking down glass. If glass ends up in a landfill, it can last several hundreds of thousands of years. That is why it is essential to continue to recycle glass bottles and use reusuable bottles when possible. Elements that glass can be recycled into are containers, fiberglass insulation, and aggregate and glasphault.

Some battery manufacturers, like Duracell and Energizer, have eliminated all of the added mercury from its alkaline batteries, so they can now be safely thrown away along with normal household waste. The other components of the batteries, like steel, zinc and manganese, don’t pose health or environmental risks in the solid waste stream and those metals are difficult to recover from batteries. Alkaline batteries have several advantages: they last for a long time, perform well at high and low temperatures and have a long storage life. They can be stored at room temperature for two years and retain 90 percent of their original capacities. Rechargeable batteries are a different story, though — they can contain mercury, cadmium, lead, and lithium, and therefore should be recycled. Car batteries and other lead-based batteries should also be recycled.

  9. Yard trimmings are the leftover material that one gets after mowing their grass. It is a solid waste, but must go somewhere. Large facilities will take yard trimmings and convert it into bulk amounts of compost and soil, and will resell it to lawn care stores like Lowes, The Home Depot, etc,.. You can drop off yard trimmings at Fun Junction, and they will take it and give it to these large facilities for a price, and turn it into compost. So yes, yard trimmings in Elizabeth City can be recycled and used again.

  11. Textile's are basically cloth. You can make textiles by weaving, knitting, crocheting, pressing fibers together or knotting. You just take remains and make them into something big, or more of. Such as Jeans. Jeans go through the cotton or fabric production then to garment manufacturing, Transportation and distribution, Consumer use, recycle or just the end of its life. There are plenty of places to recycle clothing. Such as the clothing recycle bin in the Walmart Parking Lots. Instead of throwing it away, you can recycle these things, and every piece will help raise local and world-wide funding. Not only Textiles in Elizabeth city can be recycled, but its donated, and it helps millions around the world. So if you have something you dont want or need, just donate your clothings (:

  12. Compost is a mixture of food scraps, yard scraps, and different types of paper. You can use it as a soil amendment or as a medium to grow plants. Mature compost is a stable material with a content called humus that is dark brown or black and has a soil like smell. Natural composting, or biological decomposition, began with the first plants on earth and has been going ever since. As vegetation falls into the ground, it slowly decays, providing minerals and nutrients needed for plants, animals, and microorganism. Mature compost, on the other hand, includes the production of high temperatures to destroy pathogens and weed seeds that natural decomposition doesn’t destroy. There are many benefits to composting, like the reduction or even the elimination for the need of chemical fertilizers. It also promotes higher yields of agricultural crops. There are 5 primary variables that must be controlled during composting. They are feedstock and nutrient balance, partial size, moisture content, oxygen flow, and temperature.

  14. Ferrous metals are any metals containing iron. These metals must be kept out of landfills because they can’t be decomposed naturally. The life cycle of ferrous metals starts with iron ore. This is refined and melted down to where it can be shaped into many products. These products after use can be recycled by melting them down and making new products. If ferrous metals are sent to a landfill they can rust and runoff water that passes through/over the metal will contain high levels of iron oxide which can cause tetanus if ingested. So if your scrap metal contains iron, please recycle it.

  15. The first two classification numbers of plastic are of course one and two. One is for PETE or Polyethylene Terephthalate and two is for HDPE or High Density Polyethylene. PETE can be recycled and turned into tote bags, carpet, and some material in winter clothing. HDPE can be turned into crates, lumber, and fencing. About 60% of the American population has access to a recycling program. Most curb side pickup collections gather PETE and HDPE. The items are then sorted and baled. The plastic then is shredded into flakes and are washed, they are then sent to other factories to be turned into other products.
    The recycling process in Elizabeth City is to rinse, remove lids and flatten both PETE and HDPE plastics. Which are both accepted by Pasquotank County. The plastic is then processed at Tidewater Fibre Corp. in Chesapeake VA. PETE is made into polyester material used in shirts, carpeting, sleeping bag fiberfill, etc. While HDPE is made into plastic lumber, flowerpots, trash cans, traffic barrier cones, etc.

  16. Dry-cell batteries are made up of alkaline, carbon zinc, mercuric-oxide, silver-oxide, zinc-air, and lithium. These batteries are used in everyday house hold objects, like a flashlight or remote-control cars. They can also be very small and work for a hearing-aid. Batteries are hard to recycle, so the US Congress passed a Mercury containing and rechargeable battery act. To help recycle these batteries, there is a recycling label on the recyclable ones, and what type of battery it is on the cover. Because batteries have heavy metals like lead or nickel, they will contaminate the environment if they are not disposed of correctly. You can't incinerate them; some of the metals will get into the air or can be in the ashes. If left in a landfill, they will leach into the soil. One of the only answers to lower the amount of batteries thrown away is to make tons of rechargeable ones. According to the label on the battery, you can recycle it. Recycle your batteries!

  17. Florescent lights are made of molten glass, which get blown into the spiral shape. They're popular because of their high efficiency and life span. Florescent light bulbs can't be sent to the landfill because of mercury on the inside. If it breaks,the mercury can contaminate the landfill, and that causes many environmental problems, such as deformation in animal growth, poison the fish and water, and can harm humans.

Tin-coated steel containers are 90% of the U.S. food can market, and just America uses about 36.5 billion cans a year! 63% of the steel cans are recycled, making the most recycled packaging product of this nation. Now our steel cans contain at least 25% recycled steel, and the recycled steel comes from scrap metal. The recycling process the steel cans either in bales of loose are fed into furnaces of a steel mill or foundry, and may be mixed with new steel. Also most of the mini steel companies are made from 100% recycled steel. Recycling steel saves 75% of energy is would take to create a steel form raw material, that’s enough energy to power 18 million homes!

  19. The Life Cycle Of Medical Waste:
    The North Carolina Medical Waste rules explain how all medical waste should be handled and "thrown away". All parts of medical waste management including: packaging, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal. Medical waste is disposed of as a solid waste and not as a hazardous waste. All sharp items, like needles, are to be concealed in a rigid, leak-proof, container, the container is to be kept in the upright position to avoid spills. All blood and bodily fluids are supposed to be safely concealed in a container and carried to an off-site incinerator and burned to avoid the spread of deadly diseases. Everyday check-up supplies like small wooden sticks, thermometer covers,and gloves are put in a regular trash bag but is carried to the incinerator as well.

  21. Miscellaneous Waste Paper

    Miscellaneous waste paper surrounds most of the dry&clean pieces of paper. Some examples of miscellaneous waste paper is magazines, sticky-backed notes, laser-printed white ledger, telephone books, windowed envelopes, glossy papers and many more. Waste paper recycling is when waste papers are combined together in many different forms. Since we all know that paper is made out of trees, paper is made with the pulp of trees and a big amount of water is also used. Sooo, to protect our nature and environment we live in; we need to Reduce, Reuse and RECYCLE!!  After they collect the waste of papers, the papers are sorted to their type and quality. The papers are dipped and soaked in water so the paper could obtain the pulp state. Chemicals are put on the paper to take away the ink that it had printed onto the paper. The pulp is flushed so the ink could go away. After this happens, raw materials are put on the papers. Pulp is pressed into the paper. Sheets are dried up after the last process, and are sent to be reused. Recycling of paper decreases the state of being clear of trees. It saves our green environment and makes the earth a heavenly beautiful place to live. Trees are good for all humans, it provides for us while we don’t really see it. Thanks to trees we have fresh oxygen, shelter ,shade and repeated harvests, not just that there’s many more!

  22. Lead-Acid Batteries are mostly found in lawn mowers, vehicles, and computers. This particular batteries contains lean, a toxic medal, and sulfuric acid. The disposing of lead-acid batteries in community solid waste is prohibited in many states. Because of this, it requires distributors, wholesalers, and/or retailers to take them back. If the acid from the batteries were to leak through the ground, the coil will become contaminated and the soil will become a source of led particulate and the led becomes joined with the soil particles which may be blown by wind or raised by vehicles transporting from one place to another. If lead were to be dumped into a landfill, the acid should be removed from the batteries and treated and the casing should be sealed in plastic and enclosed with concrete.

  23. Yard waste comes from getting rid of vegetation in your own yard (such as plants, grass, leaves, and other things). Instead of actually putting it in the trash can with your other garbage, yard waste has other options of getting 'rid' of. You can do composting, boiler fuel it, turned into mulch, or use passive composting. Some landfills accept some parts of yard waste like grass trimmings and leaves, but not other parts like dirt, rocks, and animal business (haha). If yard wastes get sent to landfills, it will have a few different effects: it would cost the landfill more money, they're not allowed in most places (so it's breaking recycling laws), etc. To help with this whole problem in yard trash, all you really have to do is be a little more careful and reduce, reuse, and recycle.

  24. Exactly what are white goods?
    White goods are for example Microwaves or ovens. They can't yet quite be recycled as is, or just thrown in just any land fill. But the question is, how are they to be disposed?

    White goods are mostly made up of two-thirds steel, and can be used greatly that hardly any of it ends up in landfills. So they are stripped bare and whats left is discarded. But it's not put safely away, the remaining waste may be small but highly toxic. The toxics can leach from landfills to waterways.
    Right now, government are working on better ways to better manage the life cycle of electronics.

  25. Antifreeze is a chemical additive which lowers the freezing point of water-based liquids. It is made up of mostly ethylene glycol, water, and a chemical additive package. The life cycle of antifreeze begins with raw material extraction, followed by the production of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide, the manufacture and disposal of primary and tertiary packaging, filling, disposition, and finally the disposal of used antifreeze products. Products with possible traces of antifreeze left on them can be recycled in three different ways: on-site recycling, a mobile recycling service, or off-site recycling. On-site recycling is when facility employees located on site handle the recycling process then and there. A mobile recycling service visits the recycling facility with a van or truck equipped with the necessary tools to recycle the antifreeze products. Off-site recycling is typically used when antifreeze is very prevalent. The products are transported to a special recycling facility to be broken down. Antifreeze is currently banned from all North Carolina landfills due to the Solid Waste Management Act which was implemented in 1989. This particular substance was officially banned on October 1, 1991. Used antifreeze could possible contain traces of metal, fuel, and oil particles through direct contact with the cooling system of a vehicle. Because of this, the disposal of antifreeze in North Carolina landfills could cause harmful chemicals to seep into soil and ground water if not properly disposed of or recycled. The effects of this saturation can potentially cause harm to the environment, animals and their habitats, as well as humans!

  26. You need to recycle your oyster shells. In South Carolina there is a few differet places you can go and drop off your oyster shells. When you recycle your shells, they wash them and then they let them dry for about 6 weeks to make sure that any bacteria that might have been on them has had plenty of time to die. After this process is done the oyster drop offs out all of the recycled oyster on a boat. This boat tale the oyster to an oyster bay. The boat drops all of the oyster into the water and just lets them fall down to the bottom of the ocean. They do this because when baby oysters are made they arents made witha shell, they are just baby larva swimming around, trying to find something hard to live on and attatch a shell to when they become old enough. If the larva cant find anything to suit them, and cant find anything hard then they will just die. Most larva like to just attach themselves to another oysters previous shell. Now if we dont recycle our shells then the oyster population will decrease tramendisouly and the only thing we would have had to to from preventing it was to just bring our oyster shells to an oyster shell drop off, or even ask a restraunt that sells a mass amount of oysters if they could take them because odds are they are having someone come and take their oyster shells and take them to get recycled. Oysters arent just healthy to eat, they also provide spaces for smaller fish to live, or hide from prey and they make the water cleaner.

  27. The life cycle of newspapers include: Trees are cut down in sustainable forest and combined with recycled paper. This changes to wood pulp and then processed into large rolls of paper, Newspapers from recycle bins are processed back into pulp then is combined with new pulp from trees and processed in larger rolls of paper, Rolls of paper then are used to produce the daily newspaper and magazines that we read, After we read the newspaper they are put in recycling bins or dumped in dust bins that end up in landfills but others are shredded and used to protect goods inside of packages. By putting newspapers in landfills it affects the soil, the air and the groundwater.

  29. I chose Motor oil filters. Oil filters filter the oil that goes through a car.This is similar to used oil because the oil filters still have some oil in them.These were banned form being thrown away in June of 2011. The absorbent things that sometimes come into contact with oil like wags wipes and all that kind of stuff were un banned in 2012 because they had no oil that leaked out of them so they weren't hazardous to the environment. If you have hydraulic or machine oil filters you do not have to recycle them. they recycle the oil filters by first doing stuff to it to drain the oil from it. Then they use the metal on the filter and recycle that. the paper in the oil filters can be used for energy by being burned.

  30. Tires are just made out of a rubber material.
    If tires are sent to the landfill certain pest that can carry different diseases may live in the tire piles. Sometimes the piles of tires can catch on fire, which wouldn't be good. Now a days the tire shops/ garages are required to recycle the used tires that they are given after replacing them with new tires. If you want to recycle your tires you can take them to a tire retailer or you can take it to certain recycling facility that accepts tires.
    Tires that have a pneumatic rubber covering aren't accepted in landfills but solid rubber coverings are.
    The life cycle of tires begins when a caouthuc tree located with in the southern hemisphere. Then the tires are manufacture through various raw materials and products, storage, and lots of transportation.

  31. Used oil includes motor oil, and anti-freeze. The oil can't be accepted if contaminated with water of if anti-freeze contaminated with oil. Both must be stored in a sturdy, closed container. To be recycled motor oil is sent to a US filter. Then you could see it labeled as re-refined and sold in local stores. Anti-freeze is again, sent to a US filter where it is redistilled. After that process the old anti-freeze is made into new anti-freeze.
